@Yonas3, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

It sounds like the screen flickering and persistent fan spinning began after enabling the Intel Iris Xe GPU, and the issue persists even after using Shift + Shutdown. Let’s walk through some steps to help resolve this:

Update Intel Graphics and Chipset Drivers

Outdated or incompatible drivers can cause flickering and power management issues.

  1. Visit the official HP support page: Official HP® Support
  2. Enter your notebook model number.
  3. Download and install the latest:
    • Intel Graphics Driver
    • Intel Chipset Driver
    • Intel Management Engine Interface (MEI)

Alternatively, you can use HP Support Assistant to automatically detect and install updates: HP Support Assistant | HP® Support

Disable Fast Startup

Fast Startup can interfere with proper shutdown and sleep behavior.

  1. Press Windows + X → select Power Options.
  2. Click Additional power settingsChoose what the power buttons do.
  3. Click Change settings that are currently unavailable.
  4. Uncheck Turn on fast startup.
  5. Save changes and restart.

Adjust Sleep and Display Settings

Sometimes the GPU doesn’t resume properly from sleep.

  1. Go to Control PanelPower Options.
  2. Select your current plan → Change plan settingsChange advanced power settings.
  3. Expand Intel Graphics Settings or Display → set Panel Self Refresh to Disabled (if available).
  4. Also check PCI Express > Link State Power Management → set to Off.

Clean Boot to Rule Out Conflicts

This helps identify if third-party apps are interfering.

  1. Press Windows + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
  2. Under Services, check Hide all Microsoft services, then click Disable all.
  3. Go to Startup tab → click Open Task Manager → disable all startup items.
  4. Restart the PC and test sleep/shutdown behavior.

BIOS Update (if available)

BIOS updates can improve hardware compatibility and power management.

  1. Go to HP Support Page.
  2. Enter your model and check for a BIOS update under the “BIOS” section.
  3. Follow on-screen instructions carefully to update.

Additional Notes:

  • Shift + Shutdown is a full shutdown, but if the fan still spins, it may be a firmware or driver-level issue.
  • If the issue started after enabling Iris Xe GPU manually, consider rolling back the driver via Device Manager:
    • Right-click StartDevice ManagerDisplay Adapters → right-click Intel Iris XePropertiesDriver tab → Roll Back Driver (if available).

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!
