My new HP laptop shift- insert function is not responding.
I've run the HP support software (runs outside of Windows via a reboot into it's own environment - HP PC Diagnostic UEFI utility) and it confirmed that the insert key functions when used as fn+Insert combination, but not in Windows 11.
The paste/insert via right mouse click works but being old school I tend to use the keyboard for paste/insert ops.
Can you help?

Hi @NiftyMac,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.
I see that you are facing an issue with using the one of the keyboard shortcuts on your Laptop.
Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot and potentially fix the issue:
1. Check Keyboard Shortcuts and Accessibility Settings
- Keyboard Shortcuts: Ensure that no software or system setting is overriding or disabling the Shift + Insert shortcut.
- Ease of Access: Go to Settings > Ease of Access > Keyboard. Make sure settings like Sticky Keys or Filter Keys are turned off, as these can interfere with keyboard shortcuts.
2. Update Keyboard Drivers
- Device Manager: Open Device Manager (you can find it by searching in the Start menu). Expand Keyboards, right-click on your keyboard device, and select Update driver.
- Manufacturer's Website: Check HP's website for any specific drivers or software updates for your laptop model.
3. Check for System Updates
- Windows Update: Go to Settings > Windows Update and check for any available updates. Sometimes system updates can resolve hardware compatibility issues.
4. Check Keyboard Layout Settings
- Input Method: Go to Settings > Time & language > Language > Preferred languages. Ensure your input method is correctly set up for your keyboard layout.
5. Run the Windows Troubleshooter
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters and run the Keyboard troubleshooter.
6. Test with an External Keyboard
- If you have an external USB keyboard, connect it and see if Shift + Insert works. This can help determine if the issue is with the laptop’s built-in keyboard or a software issue.
Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a great day ahead!

I hope you appreciate the irony of needing help for a HP product and the solution is being provided by same.
As i mentioned before, even if an external keyboard solved the problem it is not a practical solution. I have completed the checks as you listed but the solution was not found. Just FYI again.
As I posited could it be a BIOS issue - genius at HP said it is written by the manufacturer and brilliantly suggested contacting them!!!! Good work there. Don't want to be too snarky about, but not even realize that is their machine is ridiculous.

I use Ctrl-V for paste and Ctrl-C for copy operations.
That is pretty old school and works in notepad and all productivity software I have ever used in Unix, Linux and Windows as far back as 3.1.

I have the insert key together with F10. The only way for me to use shift-insert as paste is doing the below, EXACTLY:
Make sure Fn lock is enabled (the light on the fn key is lit). Then press IN THIS ORDER: shift-fn-F10/insert.
Any other combination that makes sense that I tried, including the above but pressing fn before shift, or (the most intuitive one) having Fn lock disabled and then simply using shift-F10/insert, do not work.
