Thanks for reaching out to us on HP Support Forums. 🙂 I came across your post and would like to help.

I understand that you have an HP Pavilion dv3-4161se Entertainment Notebook and both the shift keys do not work.

To provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

  • Since how long are the shift keys not working?
  • Did any hardware changes take place?
  • Did any software changes or updates happen on the laptop recently?

Meanwhile, I recommend you to perform the following steps to isolate the issue and arrive at a fix:

Device Manager

  • Expand "Keyboards". Under that, the keyboard drivers will be listed.
  • Right click on the keyboard driver and click on uninstall.
  • Restart your laptop.
  • While restarting, Windows should automatically reinstall the keyboard drivers.

Now, please try to use the shift keys and check if they work fine. If the issue gets resolved then you may stop here.

If the issue persists then I suggest you to run a hardware test on the keyboard by following the below steps:

  • Hold the power button for at least five seconds to turn off the computer.

  • Turn on the computer and immediately press the F2 key repeatedly, about once every second.

  • The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI) main menu is displayed.

HP PC Hardware Diagnostic UEFI screen

  • Select component tests.

List of the Component tests

  • Please initiate a test on the Keyboard - Quick interactive functional test of the keys on the keyboard. Click Keyboard, then Run once. The Keyboard Test time is 3 minutes.

I sincerely hope this fixes the issue. Keep me posted. All the best! 🙂
