DST:Fail means  the hard drive has failed/is failing and will need to be replaced. A retail laptop SATA hard drive can be used. HP uses Western Digital, Toshiba, Seagate, etc. Just be sure to get one of at least equal capacity as the original in order to use Recovery Discs. It can be larger, but not smaller capacity. For instance since you have a 500GB hdd you could use a 750GB hdd but not a 320GB hdd.

the corner of the laptop where the harddrive is installed seems to get warmer than i remember, do you think replacing the hardrive will make it cooler there? i have noticed for some time it seemed to be runniing warmer than i had noticed before. i do clean the fans and vents often, the fan seems to be running normally.

I would think a new hard drive will run cooler. All things mechanical seem to run rougher/hotter as they age and are not as smooth in operation. A 5400rpm hdd will also run a bit cooler than a 7200rpm hdd.

Hi, i ordered the drive you mentioned. I installed it, swapped out the original. i used the 5 disk recovery for full factory reset and when i try to boot afterwards, it finds no bootable disk.

i used the original 2 disk recovery set that came with my laptop, same result. when i look in the bios it shows no harddrive.

Diagnostics have ran several times and the disk checks out no errors. i can use the command prompt when booted from the DVD and see the drive and it has files loaded. but won't boot.

Maybe there is some other step i needed to perform?

Thanks

Ok, so after the 3rd time, it seems to have completed successfully and i can now boot up windows. I never got any errors during the recovery process or disk tests, so i am not sure.

But thanks alot.

Ok, after all that i stil have the same issue i had to start. Creen freezes, poweron reset to clear. then half the time if hangs on reboot. sometimes it does an automatic recovery. then hangs after that. i have replaced memory, hard drive and ran diagnostincs on memory and hard drive. recoverd to factory rebuild several times, upgraded to Windows 8 afterwards, no help. i have had issues with the AMD display adapters and when they update to new drivers, they stop working, the 4200 and the 5400 adapters, a switchable i think it is.

i guess its scrap time.

It is not un-heard of to receive a faulty new hard drive. Maybe time to RMA the drive? Especially since the BIOS was having a hard time recognizing it. Of course this could also mean a bad sata controller on the motherboard.

Btw, are you having freezes and other issues in new install of Windows 7 or only after you upgrade to Windows 8?

i think the drive is good, i had the issue in the recovery to 7, i had it in the version 8, only now it won't come up at all. i was on 10 before i replaced the drive to start with, it kept freezing as well, i was sure it was just the corrupted 10 and drivers, but then i was getting the drive error after i rolled back to win 7 again. then went back up to 8, and still had the drive errors, so ordered the new drive and started al lover again. still same issue, it has been trying to recover all evening.

Thanks
