Hello, I have an HP Notebook - 15-ac179tx with 4GB DDR3 1600MHz single channel ram. I was trying to upgrade my notebook with another 4gb ram and could only find 4GB DDR3 1600mhz dual channel ram. Is it okay to install a dual-channel 1600mhz ram with my current ram? Will the new dual-channel ram be able to work with the old single channel ram. And what exactly is the difference between a single and dual-channel ram?
The configuration I am trying to have is 4gb ddr3 single-channel + 4gb ddr3 dual-channel will this configuration be able to work properly.
Also is there any problem with using rams of two different company with the same specs together.
is this ram compatible with my device

Hi:
There is no such thing as single channel or dual channel memory.
Single channel is one memory chip and one empty memory slot, or a memory chip in the other slot that is of a different capacity (4 GB + 8 GB).
Dual channel memory is two matching capacities in both slots (2 x 4 GB).
The memory you posted is single rank (shown on the label as 1Rx8), so it would be best to make sure the memory chip in your notebook is also single rank.
I have zipped up and attached a free utility below, that will let you know the specs of the memory chip in your notebook.
Run the utility. Close out of the summary report window.
On the left side of the program window, click to expand the memory info section, and click on your memory chip listed there.
Under the module characteristics section of the report on the right side of the window, it will provide the number of ranks.
It will be 1 or 2.
If it is 1, the memory on the link you posted should be compatible.
