@neelix2025, Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When changing the motherboard in an HP Notebook like the HP 17-bs061st, and Windows 11 installation doesn't detect the SSD, it’s often related to SATA controller settings or missing drivers. Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve this issue:
✅ Step 1: Check BIOS Settings (AHCI vs Intel RST)
- Power on the laptop and immediately press F10 to enter BIOS.
- Navigate to System Configuration > SATA Device Mode.
- Check whether it's set to:
- Intel RST or
- AHCI
- If set to Intel RST:
- Try switching to AHCI, save changes, and boot from the Windows installer again.
- If already on AHCI:
- Try switching to Intel RST, save, and retry installation with the correct Intel RST driver.
⚠️ Note: Some replacement motherboards default to RST, while others come with AHCI—Windows installer won’t see the drive unless the correct mode is set.
✅ Step 2: Load the Correct Intel RST Driver (If Using RST Mode)
- Go to another PC and download the Intel RST VMD driver compatible with Intel 6th/7th/8th Gen platforms (depends on your CPU and new board).
- Extract it to a USB drive.
- During Windows installation:
- When no drive is detected, click Load Driver.
- Navigate to your USB and select the iaStorAC.inf or similar.
✅ Step 3: Is Your SSD NVMe or SATA?
- Check if your SSD is:
- SATA (2.5") or
- NVMe (M.2 PCIe)
- If it’s NVMe, and you're using a newer motherboard, some NVMe drives need Windows 10/11 native NVMe drivers, or the BIOS must recognize the drive as bootable.
- Some HP BIOS versions don’t support booting from certain NVMe SSDs without an updated BIOS.
✅ Step 4: Test Drive Visibility in BIOS
- Boot into BIOS again (press F10).
- Under Storage > Device Configuration, check if the SSD is listed.
- If it’s not listed at all, you may have:
- A loose connection
- An incompatible SSD
- A damaged SSD
- Or a BIOS issue
🔄 Optional: Reset BIOS to Defaults
If you’re unsure about BIOS settings, it may help to:
- Enter BIOS.
- Choose Restore Defaults (F9) > Save & Exit.
- Reboot and recheck SATA mode + Windows installation.
💡 If All Else Fails
If the SSD still doesn't show after:
- Switching between AHCI and RST,
- Loading proper drivers, and
- Verifying the SSD works in another machine,
Then your replacement motherboard may not support that specific SSD, especially if it came from a different model.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
