Hi @jewettjc ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Pavilion x360 - 15-cr0088cl is hanging or taking an excessively long time to complete monthly updates, there are several steps you can take to troubleshoot and potentially resolve the issue:

1. Check for Pending Updates

  • Sometimes, multiple updates pending for installation can cause the system to hang. Make sure all updates are installed one by one.
  • Steps:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
    • Click on Check for updates and see if there are any pending updates.

2. Run Windows Update, Troubleshooter

  • This built-in tool can detect and fix common problems with Windows Update.
  • Steps:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
    • Click on Additional troubleshooters, then select Windows Update and click Run the troubleshooter.

3. Free Up Disk Space

  • Lack of sufficient disk space can cause updates to fail or hang. Ensure you have enough free space on your drive.
  • Steps:
    • Open File Explorer, right-click on the C: drive, and select Properties.
    • Click on Disk Cleanup to free up space.

4. Disable Startup Programs

  • Programs that run on startup can interfere with the update process. Disabling non-essential startup programs can help.
  • Steps:
    • Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
    • Go to the Startup tab and disable unnecessary programs.

5. Perform a Clean Boot

  • A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This can help determine if background programs are causing issues with updates.
  • Steps:
    • Type msconfig in the Windows search bar and press Enter.
    • Go to the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services, and click Disable all.
    • Go to the Startup tab, click Open Task Manager, and disable all startup items.
    • Restart your computer.

6. Check for Corrupt System Files

  • Corrupted system files can cause Windows Update to hang or fail. Use the System File Checker tool to scan for and repair corrupt files.
  • Steps:
    • Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
    • Type sfc /scannow and press Enter.
    • Wait for the scan to complete and follow any on-screen instructions.

8. Update Drivers

  • Outdated or incompatible drivers can also cause issues with updates. Make sure all your drivers are up to date.
  • Steps:
    • Go to Device Manager, right-click on each device, and select Update driver.

9. Consider a Windows Repair

  • If none of the above steps work, you may need to perform a Windows repair. This can be done without losing your data.
  • Steps:
    • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
    • Click Get Started under Reset this PC and choose Keep my files.
