HP 14-cf2000 Laptop PC (8TC58AV)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Laptop 14-cf2033wm came with 128 GB SATA M.2 SSD.

I want to increase the size to 1tb or 2tb.

I'm having trouble finding information regarding the port type used M or B or M/B because i will need to purchase an external enclosure to install the new storage on to clone the drive before replacing the original storage.

Thank you.

Hi:

The notebooks with the Intel® Pentium® Silver M.2 SSD's only support SATA M.2 drives, not NVMe,

See chapter 1 of the service manual for the supported drive types.

HP 14-cf2000 Laptop PC series - Setup and User Guides | HP® Support

As far as the drive size the drive is M.2 2280.

You need an enclosure that supports SATA M.2 2280 drives or both SATA and NVMe M.2 SSD's.

Your notebook's drive has two notches, but the M.2 slot only has one key, so that doesn't matter.

What matters is the enclosure you buy must indicate SATA M.2 SSD support.

Hi Paul,

"The notebooks with the Intel® Pentium® Silver M.2 SSD's only support SATA M.2 drives, not NVMe"

When I check on the HP site for compatible SSD drives it refers me to crucial site for my Laptop.

On crucial site it recommends for my laptop as an example

Crucial P5 Plus 2TB PCIe M.2 2280SS Gaming SSD

  • CT2000P5PSSD8

  • Configuration ID: CT20675780

2TB M.2 (2280) Single-Sided SSD • PCIe NVMe Gen 4 • 6,600 MB/s Read, 5,000 MB/s Write

P5 and P3 models all say PCIe NVMe as being compatible.

So before I order something from somewhere I wanted to double check as Im not sure this would work as it says NVMe

Thanks and sorry for the confusion

You're very welcome.

Chapter 1, page 2 of the service manual indicates that only SATA M.2 SSD's are supported for the notebooks with the Pentium Silver processors.

Since the service manual is for the older 14-cf1xxx model series, it is remotely possible that NVMe SSD's will work in the newer 14-cf2000 model series, but unfortunately, I don't know that for a fact.

I even checked the parts list for your notebook to make sure the specs were not in error and the parts list also confirms the drive installed is SATA.

HP PartSurfer

L25981-001
SSD 128GB 2280M2 SATA3 TLC

I'm also skeptical that if NVMe SSD's were supported, why didn't HP install one in your notebook?

NVMe SSD's are now the mainstream drive used in most notebooks nowadays, not SATA.

What I do know is that since the currently installed M.2 drive is SATA, a M.2 SATA SSD having a greater storage capacity should work.

So, if you want to take a chance on installing a faster performing NVMe SSD in your notebook, which would definitely be great, I would only do it if you have a guarantee that you can return it if it doesn't work.

However, if you want to play it safe, this is the 1 TB M.2 SATA SSD I recommend:

Amazon.com: Western Digital 1TB WD Blue SA510 SATA Internal Solid State Drive SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s,...

This is the 2 TB M.2 SATA SSD I recommend:

Amazon.com: Western Digital 2TB WD Blue SA510 SATA Internal Solid State Drive SSD - SATA III 6 Gb/s,...
