Hello.
I have a HP elitebook 8440p with a cpu I5 and I would like to pass it in cpu I7.
I know that the HP brand has sold.
my level in computer science is limited.
I bought this cpu I7 blindly, not knowing if it is compatible:
https://www.ebay.fr/itm/Intel-Core-i7-720QM-1-6Ghz-6MB-SLBLY-PGA-988-Socket-G1-CPU-Mobile-Processor/... 3AIT & _trksid = p2060353.m2749.l2649
when i turn on the pc after change, i have a black screen and the pc does not start.
I looked for the latest update of the bios, but it did not change anything.
I think my I7 is not compatible.
please, can someone explain to me what I need to do to spend my 8440p in I7?
tell me what you need and where I find it.
thanking you in advance
PS: I'm French, it's a google translation ...

Hi:
Does your model have the Intel graphics adapter, or the nVidia graphics adapter?
If your notebook has the onboard Intel graphics adapter, the quad core processor won't work because those require a discrete graphics adapter. They can't work with the onboard Intel graphics.
The same goes for the desktop version of the processor.
The best you can do with the onboard intel graphics is the i7-620M
See the comparison specs between the processor you bought and the 620M.
https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/compare.html?productIds=43560,43122
Notice the i7-620M has support for the onboard Intel graphics, where the i7-720QM does not.
You got a black screen because there are no graphics.
If your notebook has the nVidia graphics adapter, then I don't know why the processor you bought didn't work.

good-morning Paul.
thanks for that precise answer.
I do not think my elitebook has a video card.

You're very welcome.
Here is how you can tell if your notebook has the Intel or Nvidia graphics adapter.
Go to the device manager.
Click to expand the Display Adapters device manager category.
Under that category, there will either be an Intel graphics adapter, or a Nvidia graphics adapter listed there.
If your notebook has the Intel graphics adapter, then that is definitely why the i7-QM processor you installed didn't work.
