Hello,
I own a HP Compaq CQ58 with the following main components:
Motherboard: HP 685783-001, HP 685783-501, or HP 685783-601 not sure;
CPU: Intel B960, 2.2 Ghz (HP 664662-001);
Ram Memory: 8 GB.
My problem is that the computer is heating up in multitasking or Google Chrome, the performance is poor, so I understand that the Celeron processor is running hard and the cooler always goes at high speeds.
I think to upgrade mb + cpu. In the manual, this CQ58 was sold with i5 cpu too. But I do not know what the difference between the three types of motherboards for i5 cpu is - HP 685107-001, HP 685107-501 or 685107-601.
Can someone help me? Thank you.

Hello,
I want to reprise this topic cause I have the same problem but with CQ58-221SL C8D71EA#ABZ. The only info I found on the web (to be confirmed) is that the processor is an Intel B980. I just want to know if I can upgrade with an i5-3210m cause lately the laptop is very slow. I would like to change CPU and adding RAM module and SSD.
Could you please help me?
Best regards.

See p. 21 of the Manual. Pentium and Celeron models have a different motherboard with a different chipset so yours is not compatible with an Intel Core (i3/i5) processor. 8 gigs (2 x 4) DDR3-1333 is the maximum memory and a 2.5 inch SATA SSD in place of the hard drive would likely be your best upgrade. The laptop is now nearly obsolete and does not justify any major upgrade expense.

Yes if you put in the i3/i5 motherboard it will fit. All other connections should be the same and you should be able to reuse wifi card and other plugins. The i3/i5 board may have a couple extra ports and it might be necessary to dremel out a hole in the chassis to use them. Not sure.

Hi Huffer,
do you know if CQ58-221Sl can accept a 8GB or 16GB ram module? On the manual seems that 4GB is the max.
Meanwhile I ordered a SSD and some thermal conductive paste, next days I will disassemble and clean the PC (especially the fan).
Thanks.
