Here's the specs:

specs

You have an AMD Turion RM-74 processor and 4 gigs of RAM. The RAM is DDR2, and it can take 8 gigs of DDR2, but that memory from any reputable vendor is crazy expensive, like $150++ for 2 x 4 gig modules.

Here is the Service Manual:

Manual

The top compatible processor is a AMD Turion™ Ultra Dual-Core 35W ZM-86 2.40-GHz with 2-MB L2 cache

So you would go from 2.2 ghz at 1 meg L2 cache to 2.4 ghz at 2 megs L2 cache, or maybe a 20% processing power improvement. Not enough, IMO, to justify the difficulty because it still is not in the ballpark of today's machines.

You can buy the processor from a very reputable vendor for $15 with free shipping. That should tell you what the demand is for it. Basically obsolete.

I have replaced the motherboards in several dv7-1000 series and it is one of the more difficult laptops to disassemble. A lot of strange ribbon cables and daughterboards all over the place.

We stand ready to help in any way possible with the upgrade but in this case probably the best advice I can't give you is "don't".
