The previously accepted solution is incorrect.  I own two C700 computers, one running a T9300 CPU with 5GB of ram and the other (the computer being used to type this now) running a T8300 with 3GB of ram.

 

Additionally, I have 128GB SSD's in each machine as boot disks with the DVD drives having been replaced with disk caddys housing 500GB SATA hard drives for storage.

 

There are a number of threads, both here and elsewhere, detailing suggested upgrade paths and outcomes.  While the machine will never compete with current day laptops, you can make significant improvements to your existing specs and certainly much better than has been suggested for a relatively minimal outlay.
