Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I attempted to upgrade to Windows 11. Received note that the CPU (Intel Core i7-7500U/CPU@2.70GH can't be upgraded. Can the CPU on a Notebook Model-15ay196nr be replaced ? I've read some blogs that the CPU in the Notebook is "welded into the unit" and can't be replaced or upgraded.

@Keywest105,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

You are correct -the Intel Core i7-7500U processor in your HP Notebook 15-ay196nr is soldered (BGA-mounted) directly to the motherboard. This means:

  • The CPU cannot be replaced or upgraded without replacing the entire motherboard.

  • This is common in Ultrabooks and budget laptops, where CPUs are not socketed.

Windows 11 Compatibility:

The i7-7500U is not supported by Microsoft for Windows 11, even though it is a capable CPU. Microsoft requires newer CPUs (8th gen Intel or Ryzen 2000 and later) for full Windows 11 support.

However, there are a number of reliable and effective methods developed which would allow you to almost effortlessly upgrade your so-called "unsupported device" to Windows 11, such as this easy-to-follow YouTube instructional video shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lSrmhhigEhY&t=332s&ab_channel=Tips2Fix.

This method uses a clever Microsoft (Server) backdoor Windows 11 install method.

This works great: I have used it myself on a number of legacy (pre 8th gen Intel Core) HP desktops without any issues whatsoever.

Btw, in the off-chance you don't like W11, you have 10 days to roll back to Windows 10. After 10 days, unless you follow the steps outlined in this instructional video, you may need to do a fresh install of Windows 10. Either way, this video will show you what to do: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2v9_-4JCh_U&ab_channel=Tips2Fix.

Kind Regards,
