I am looking for advice about upgrading my current computer and I hope someone here can help me.

I have an HP Envy laptop running Windows 11 and I have been using it for about four years. I use this computer for almost everything. I work with programs like Blender and Unity, I sometimes play demanding games, and I also use it for digital drawing with a Wacom tablet. It really is my all in one computer.

Lately I am starting to notice its limits. The battery drains very fast and my storage gets full quickly. I already use an external drive to save space, but it still feels like the system is struggling. Performance is not always great, especially when using heavier software. I also cannot connect my Oculus VR headset because my graphics card is not compatible.

I was wondering if there are ways to upgrade my computer without taking it apart. I do not have any experience with opening or upgrading computers internally. Are there external upgrade options that could help, like an external graphics card or other devices that can improve performance? If external GPUs exist, would they even work with an HP Envy laptop and Windows 11?

If internal upgrades are the only real option, where should I go for that? A computer repair shop, HP service, or another specialist? Is it generally expensive to upgrade a laptop like this, and at what point would it be smarter to just buy a new computer that can handle heavier tasks?

I am very interested in affordable or budget friendly solutions. Even small improvements would help. Are there Windows settings, system optimizations, or software I can remove that might improve performance? Any tips on battery life, memory usage, or graphics performance would be very welcome.

In short, my questions are:
Is it possible to upgrade this laptop externally?
Are external graphics cards a realistic option for my situation?
Would internal upgrades be worth it for a four year old HP Envy?
Where should I go if the laptop needs to be opened?
Are there software or system tweaks that could help performance?
Would it be more cost effective to upgrade or to buy a new computer?

Thank you very much for reading and for any advice you can give.

Hi @MultimediaLies,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Upgrading your HP Envy laptop can significantly enhance its performance, especially if you're using demanding applications like Blender, Unity, or playing resource-intensive games. Here are a few recommendations to consider:

RAM Upgrade: Adding more RAM can help speed up processes in applications, improve multitasking, and enhance overall performance. Check your laptop's current RAM capacity and determine how much additional RAM can be installed. You can typically find this information in your laptop's specifications. For most HP Envy laptops, it's possible to replace or add RAM easily.

SSD Upgrade: If your laptop doesn't already have a Solid State Drive (SSD), replacing the existing hard drive with an SSD can drastically improve boot times, application load times, and overall system responsiveness. If you have an SSD but it's too small, you might consider upgrading to a larger capacity SSD.

Graphics Card Upgrade: Laptops typically have less versatility in upgrading graphics cards because the GPU is often integrated with the motherboard. However, if your model supports eGPUs (external GPUs), this could be a viable option to boost graphics performance for gaming and rendering.

Battery Replacement: If the battery is draining quickly, it might be time to replace it. Batteries typically degrade over time, especially with heavy use. Check for a compatible replacement through HP or authorized dealers to ensure your laptop's longevity.

Software Optimization: Ensure your system is optimized by regularly updating your operating system and drivers using tools like the HP Support Assistant. This can help resolve bugs, enhance security, and improve performance.

External Cooling Solutions: If your laptop is overheating, which could affect performance, consider using a laptop cooling pad to help keep temperatures down during intense usage.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
