Hi,
I agree with @Huffer that what you need is a powerful CPU and GPU so somekind of mobile workstation such as the Z books
a desktop would give much more performance for a lot lower cost if you are not in a mobile situation.
Since you already have an SSD it will not make much difference if the actual software is working with files on the SSD.
Personally I would just remove the HDD and SSD and place a 1TB M2 PCIe SSD in the machine.
Take care,
David

Hi,
The only real upgrade (CPU and GPU not possible) would be to install an M2 PCIe NVMe in the machine which would give a great improvement in everyday performance
You should check if the M2 slot is present in the notebook. On page 35 of service manual you can see the steps to remove the bottom cover to take a look
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05493193.pdf
If present you can install an M2 PCie NVMe SSD such as the Samsung 980 or similar. and then reinstall the OS.
Hope it helps,
David

OK.
Is the 256 GB SSD an M2 SATA3 or an M2 PCIe NVMe SSD?
The M2 PCIe would speed things up. Is the software using the SSD for storing and working on the files?
Well the only other upgrade would be to go from 16GB of RAM to 32GB of DDR4 2400Mhz.
Hope it helps,
David

The difference between a SATA and NVME M.2 will not affect video performance. Even going from 16gb to 32 gb of RAM would not help much. For doing 3D modeling work you need top end CPU and GPU power and those parts of your laptop specs cannot be changed....the chips are soldered to the motherboard. You need to look into a Mobile Workstation or gaming type laptop not a business/consumer model.

What kind of performance? Yes it would make it boot up faster, apps would open and respond better but video frame rate and processing power would not be changed. I still recommend the upgrade just do not expect it will improve your ability to do games or run 3D modeling or workstation type apps.
