Hi @bumbocker,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

There could be several reasons why your external hard drives keep getting disconnected and corrupting the data. Here are some steps you can take to try and troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check your USB cable: Make sure you're using a good-quality USB cable that is in good condition. Sometimes, a faulty or worn-out cable can cause disconnection issues.
  • Check your USB port: Ensure that the USB port you're using is not damaged. Try using a different USB port to see if the issue persists.
  • Check for power supply issues: If your external hard drive doesn't have its own power source, it may be drawing too much power from your computer's USB port, causing it to disconnect. Try using a USB hub with its own power supply or connecting your external hard drive to a different computer to see if the issue persists.
  • Check your power settings: Your computer's power settings may be causing it to turn off the USB ports to save power, which could be causing your external hard drive to disconnect. Try changing your power settings to prevent USB ports from turning off.
  • Check for driver updates: Ensure that your computer's USB drivers are up to date. Outdated drivers can cause disconnection issues.
  • Run a virus scan: A virus or malware infection on your computer could be causing the disconnection issues. Run a full virus scan on your computer and external hard drive to rule out any malware-related issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
