Common problems for Battery

hp 15
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
This is my second question about the battery. The previous question was about CMOS, and the answer was that there is no CMOS battery in the HP 15.
So the question is about battery health on my HP 15. Is it safe to use it while keeping the adapter plugged in all the time? I'm worried it might degrade the battery.

I’ve seen other laptops have a setting to cap the charge at 80%, which supposedly lets the laptop run directly off the power adapter instead of the battery. I can't find this setting anywhere in my Windows settings or the BIOS. Does the HP 15 automatically bypass the battery when it's full, or am I hurting my battery by keeping it plugged in?
fyi my previos os is arch linux now i use windows 10

Hi @Meozetacore

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand your concern—it’s natural to worry about battery health when you’re using your laptop plugged in most of the time. Thank you for sharing the details about your HP 15 and the steps you’ve already taken to explore settings.

Let’s clarify how your laptop manages charging and what you can do to keep the battery in good condition.

How Charging Works on Your HP 15

  • When the battery reaches full charge, the laptop’s charging system automatically stops sending current into the battery. At that point, the system runs directly off the adapter.
  • This means you are not “overcharging” the battery by leaving it plugged in. The battery is bypassed once it’s full, and the adapter powers the laptop.

Battery Health Considerations

  • Lithium‑ion batteries, like the one in your HP 15, naturally wear over time due to charge cycles and heat.
  • Keeping the laptop plugged in is generally safe, but prolonged exposure to high temperatures (for example, using it on soft surfaces that block ventilation) can accelerate wear.
  • Unlike some other brands, your HP 15 does not have a built‑in option to cap charging at 80%.

Steps You Can Take

Use the HP App

  • Install or open the HP App on your Windows 10 laptop.
  • Add your device and go to Battery Health Management if available. Some models include options to optimize charging behavior.
  • Download here: HP App for Windows

Keep the Laptop Cool

  • Ensure good airflow by using the laptop on a hard surface.
  • Clean vents periodically to prevent dust buildup.

Occasional Battery Cycling

  • Every few weeks, unplug the adapter and let the battery discharge to around 40–50%, then recharge.
  • This helps the battery controller recalibrate and maintain accurate charge readings.

Check Battery Status

  • In the HP App, run Diagnose & Fix and select battery diagnostics.
  • This will give you a clear report on battery health and charging behavior.

For more details, you can refer to this guide: HP Notebook PCs – Improving Battery Performance

So yes, it is safe to use your HP 15 while plugged in. The system automatically bypasses the battery once it’s full, and you’re not harming it by keeping the adapter connected. The key is to manage heat and occasionally let the battery cycle.
