what battery to buy

My battery in my HP Envy Notebook - 17 - u273cl is dead.  How can I find out the make and model of the battery so I can get it replaced? I googled and it said to check the HP Laptop Battery Finder, but the link doesn't work and there is no such thing when I search for it on the HP site.  How can I find out what kind of battery I need?  Then is it safe for me to take this to a Batteries and Bulbs place to get it replaced?  I want them to use the right battery model, not some cheap knockoff. I hope I get an email answer to this because I have no idea how to get back to this place to see answers.  Thanks.

Thanks but I don't understand your answer. I'm guessing those part numbers are batteries?  Why two different numbers?  And why are they different than the "HP-SG03XL-17-U273CL" battery part number I saw online?  Which one is the exact correct part number for the exact battery that is supposed to be installed in this computer?  I want to get the exact correct battery, not a cheap imitation. I need to know so I can find out if Batteries and Bulbs has this exact battery, or will they have to order it for me?  And why does your answer say "includes cable"?  Why would the battery need a cable when it is inside the computer, not external?

I you read my post you would see that the highlighted part is the HP Part number which is from the Maintenance and Service guide which I also included. 

Using the HP part number specifies that it meets HP's battery specification for the system board in you laptop's system board.

""HP-SG03XL-17-U273CL" is not an HP part number.

It is a combination of the generic battery  part and the laptop product name.

A n internal  laptop battery always has a ribbon cable that has a connector on it which plugs into the header on the laptop's system board.

The laptop  external batteries do not have cables, they have metal contacts on the inside edge which match those on the laptop's lower enclosure.

Thanks, I did read your post but it wasn't clear to me that the part numbers you listed were for batteries, or just some component of a battery, or what; confused because there are two part numbers listed but I just want the one exact correct battery number that is supposed to go in this computer. Also you said "for a vendor battery" and I'm not sure what that means.  A third-party vendor? I don't want any old vendor; I want an official HP vendor for an official HP battery, not a third-party knockoff. I'm now guessing that both of those part numbers are official HP batteries and that either will work in my computer, is that correct? So what is the difference and which one is the best? You said there is something weird about the HP battery specification - what is weird about it? I don't want anything weird. I just want to know what is the best, appropriate, correct, most authentic reliable battery to put in this computer so I can get the darn thing replaced. Thank you.

Generally only someone who understands electrical and electronic specifications will spot it.

Take a closer at the description of both batteries and see if you can spot it. 

The HP Part number is a specification created by HP laptop engineers.

Batteries that meet the specification are allowed to use it on their batteries.

HP does not manufacture batteries.

The HP design team engineers write the specifications and they are put out for bid to the appropriate manufacturing sector.

 HP either accepts or reject bids and quotes and chooses which ones will be used in the manufactured product.  

The battery manufacturers are all "third party". 

If you don't want to use the HP part number for the battery options in the manual that is your choice.

They both look identical in format; just have different numbers.  What does “WHr” mean?  Is it better to have 61-WHr or 41-WHr?  Is it better to have 5.36WHr or 3.63 WHr?  Which battery is better? When I click on the battery links you included, it takes me to a list of sellers like Amazon and Laptop Battery Express, both of which call this a SG03XL battery, which you previously told me was not the correct HP part number.  Laptop Battery Express wants $110 and Amazon wants $32, so I’m guessing all the ones listed on Amazon for “849315-856” are not authentic.  How much should I expect to pay for an authentic battery, and where can I find an honest vendor?

That is the part number I recommend you purchase.

HP does not sell the battery part number you need, so you will have to find one from another reseller.

Search by the HP 849315-856 battery part number and find a compatible aftermarket battery that references that part number.

Thank you so much for your straightforward answer.  Should I attempt to buy this battery myself, then take it and the laptop to Batteries+Bulbs to have them install it?  Or should I ask Batteries+Bulbs to order the battery for me, and then take my laptop to them to install it?

I recommend you buy a battery from a seller that offers a 1-year warranty on it.

The vendor you mentioned sells this battery for $110, which is expensive but it also specifically states it is a 61WHr battery

I find the same battery on eBay for $33.00 but notice it is only the 41.5 WHr battery...

So, make sure if you buy a battery from anyone that has it for less, that it is the 61 WHr battery.

The battery removal and replacement procedure can be found in chapter 5.

If you feel you can do the work yourself or know someone that can, you will save labor costs.

Otherwise, yes, you can take the notebook to Batteries+Bulbs or a local PC repair shop to have the battery installed.
