My old HDD crashed, but the HP dealer was able to retrieve my data files, but not partitions that I know of. I need to restore Windows 10 on this new SSD to get it working again. I have the old subscription software files, but they would need to be "restored" to operate again on a new SSD. This is beyond my experience, and apparently the dealer's, too. So I bought a new HP desktop CPU, but lost the functionality of my old laptop.

All standard SATA 2.5" SSD's for laptops should work but please only use reliable brands such as Crucial, Samsung, WD.. Since you previously upgraded your PC to Windows 10, you can do a clean install W10 for free by using the media creation tool at the link below.
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10
The tool will allow you to make a bootable installation media (USB/DVD) and you can use installation media to install.
During the installation process if you are asked to enter a product key, check the 'Skip' box and W10 will install and then automatically activate once you are connected to the internet using the key embedded in BIOS of your machine.
Then you can install the drivers and available software you need from your PC's support page.
Regards.
