Hi @EL111,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting a black screen at startup often indicates a hardware or firmware issue. Here's a troubleshooting guide for your HP ENVY x360 Convertible Laptop PC 15m-ed1013dx:

Basic Checks

Check the Display:

  • Ensure the brightness isn't turned all the way down.
  • Connect an external monitor to determine if the issue is with the laptop screen.

Check for Sounds/LED Codes:

  • Listen for any beeping or observe blinking LED lights, which can indicate an error code.
  • Refer to HP's LED and beep code documentation for specific diagnostics.

Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the laptop and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Disconnect all peripherals (USB devices, external drives, etc.).
  3. Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds to drain residual power.
  4. Reconnect the AC adapter and try turning it on again.

Test the RAM

Faulty or improperly seated RAM can cause the black screen issue.

  1. Open the back panel and check the RAM modules (if you're comfortable doing so).
  2. Reseat the RAM: Remove and reinsert the modules securely.
  3. If you have two RAM sticks, try booting with one at a time to identify the faulty one.

Check BIOS

  1. Turn off the laptop and then turn it back on while repeatedly pressing the F10 key to enter BIOS.
  2. If the BIOS appears, the issue is likely with the operating system or drivers.

Update/Recover BIOS

  1. Use another computer to download the latest BIOS version from the HP support website.
  2. Create a USB recovery drive with the BIOS update tool.
  3. Boot your laptop using the USB and follow the instructions to update or recover the BIOS.

Run HP Diagnostics

  1. Turn on the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to access the HP Hardware Diagnostics.
  2. Run a System Test to identify hardware issues.

Advanced Troubleshooting

Reset Display Driver:

  • While the screen is black, press Windows Key + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics driver.
  • Listen for a beep or screen flash indicating a reset.

Boot into Safe Mode:

  • If the HP logo appears briefly, press F8 or hold Shift during startup to access Safe Mode.
