want to replace my CMOS battery, but I don’t know where it is located. In my case, I think both my primary battery and CMOS battery are already dead. I just want to replace the CMOS battery and leave the primary one as it is, since I only plan to use the laptop with the adapter.

this is my laptop https://www.tokopedia.com/olympuscomp/laptop-hp-15-ryzen-5-5500u-16gb-512ssd-radeon-vega7-w11-15-6fh...

@Meozetacore,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

On your HP 15 with Ryzen 5 5500U, there is no separate CMOS (coin-cell) battery inside. Many older laptops indeed were fitted with a small round coin aka button-cell battery (usually a CR2032) just for keeping the BIOS settings and system clock. But in newer thin-and-light models such as yours, HP designed it differently:

  • The main laptop battery now also powers the CMOS/RTC (real-time clock) memory.

  • This means if the main battery is drained or removed, the BIOS/clock will reset whenever the laptop is fully without power.

So, in your case, if it is the case that your main battery is no longer working and you only want to run the laptop from the AC adapter, the laptop will still work normally. The only side effect is that whenever the laptop is completely unplugged, the date/time and some BIOS settings may reset to default.

Since your model does not have a separate CMOS battery, there is nothing to replace. The main battery performs that function.

If you want to avoid having to re-enter the time and settings, the only solution would be to replace the main battery.

Kind Regards,

what should I do now? If I remove the main battery, the laptop still turns on, but the SSD isn’t detected, so I can’t boot into my OS. Should I replace the battery right away, or is it fine to keep using it even though it’s already leaking?, I've heard that if the battery leaks it can damage other components on the motherboard, even the motherboard itself.

@Meozetacore,

Yes, you are absolutely right to be concerned -a leaking battery is not safe to leave inside the laptop, even if you mainly use AC power. Here's what's happening and what you should do next:

  1. Safety first:
    If the main battery is leaking (you notice swelling, corrosion, or white/green residue), it must be removed immediately. Battery electrolyte can corrode the motherboard, SSD contacts, and even cause short circuits or fires.

  2. Do not keep using the laptop with the leaking battery connected.
    Disconnect power, remove the bottom cover, and unplug and remove the internal battery carefully. If it looks swollen or damaged, do not puncture or squeeze it -place it in a non-conductive plastic bag (or wrap it in paper) and take it to an authorized e-waste or battery recycling center.

  3. Why the SSD disappears when the battery is removed:
    In some HP laptops, the CMOS/RTC power rail is derived entirely from the main battery. When you remove it, certain power initialization sequences fail -sometimes causing the SSD not to be detected until a CMOS reset or replacement battery is installed.
    Once a new, healthy battery is installed, it is anticipated that your system will resume normal hardware detection.

  4. What to do next:

    • Replace the internal (main) battery with a genuine HP replacement.
      Example part for HP 15 with Ryzen 5 5500U: Battery model often L11119-855 or HSTNN-IB9L (confirm via your exact product number under the bottom cover or HP Support Assistant).

    • After replacement, enter BIOS (press F10 on startup) and check if your SSD is detected.

    • If BIOS time resets or SSD is still missing, load BIOS defaults and save changes.

  5. Temporary use without battery (optional):
    You can use the laptop on AC only, but not with a leaking battery connected. Once removed, it's safe to run directly from AC -just remember your BIOS clock and settings will reset if unplugged.

Summary: Yes, you should remove the leaking battery immediately.

Do not continue using the laptop with it inside -battery leakage can destroy the motherboard.

Once removed, either operate on AC power only (temporarily) or replace it with a genuine HP battery for proper BIOS and SSD function.

Kind Regards,
