I have the exact same problem but it is not just HP, other OEMs embed the serial number of case of many laptops and they can be difficult to read. Some modem Wi-Fi passwords are even worse; even with a magnifier problem with the letters "ilL1oO0D8B5S" can happen.
You can always get the information you need by using the HP Support Assistant. The app will read the information from the motherboard. This is actually better than looking at the case because a refurbished or used system may have a different motherboard than the original case contained. When you first obtain a PC you should run the HPSA and verify the case serial matches the motherboard serial. When you activate windows, Microsoft records the serial information in your M$oft account and you can find it under devices. Be sure to enable "find my Device'
