According to the Maintenance and Service Guide  it supports up to 12gb of  DDR3L (1600 MHz) which means you can replace one of the 4gb sticks with an 8gb.

And based on quite a bit of user experience, not officially from the Service Manual, if it will take 12 gigs it will also take 16 (2 x 8 gig).

I agree @Huffer It really makes no sense why it would be limited to 12gb if the machine supports an 8gb in either slot. Unless it is simply the only option HP offered on the model when ordering.
