I purchased a 2019 Spectre 15 x360 Convertible Laptop and have never had any issues with it. However, just recently, it no longer recognizes that it has a battery installed and only works under the power of the plug-in adapter.
I'm pretty technologically adept and can usually fix these kinds of issues by following the directions of troubleshooting from manufacturers and have followed all the troubleshooting on the HP support site, but NOTHING has fixed it.
I continue to get the error message when I reboot the laptop and it still does not recognize the battery.
Is there something else I can do? Or should I try resetting it to the factory settings?

Hi @hattjam1008
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
That’s frustrating, especially since you’ve already gone through HP’s troubleshooting steps without success. Given your methodical approach, I’ll suggest a few additional steps that might help:
Check Battery Connection
- If you’re comfortable opening the laptop, try disconnecting and reconnecting the battery. Some users have reported that a loose connection can cause this issue.
Reset BIOS Settings
- Power off the laptop, then press F10 while turning it on to enter BIOS.
- Look for an option to restore defaults and apply the changes.
- Restart and check if the battery is detected.
Uninstall & Reinstall Battery Drivers
- Open Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
- Expand Batteries and uninstall Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery.
- Restart the laptop—Windows should automatically reinstall the driver.
Perform a Hard Reset
- Disconnect the power adapter and remove any peripherals.
- Hold the power button for 30 seconds to drain residual power.
- Plug the adapter back in and turn on the laptop.
Check for HP Battery Alerts
- Some users have reported seeing an HP Battery Alert (601) message. If you see this, it may indicate a failing battery.
Let me know how it goes!

Thank you, @Hawks_Eye, for the very detailed advice to try to fix the issue. Unfortunately, none of the software or firmware issues helped. And while I finally was able to remove the two screws on the bottom plate of my laptop, it would not come off. At this time, I'm going to have to look for more assistance or just use my laptop plugged in for a while. I can't afford to replace the laptop as a whole.
If it's possible to replace the battery and that's what needs to happen, I'll look into that.

It’s frustrating when a laptop suddenly stops recognizing its battery, especially after trying all the recommended troubleshooting steps.
Since the bottom plate isn’t coming off easily, you might need a plastic pry tool to gently loosen it without damaging the casing.
Next Steps to Consider
1. Try a Different Approach to Opening the Laptop
- Some HP Spectre x360 models have hidden clips that require careful prying.
- You can check HP’s official battery replacement guide here or watch this tutorial for step-by-step instructions.
2. Check for a Genuine Battery Issue
- If the laptop only works on AC power, the battery may be faulty or not properly connected.
- Some users have reported that non-genuine batteries can trigger errors.
3. Test Without the Battery
- If you can access the battery, try disconnecting it and running the laptop only on AC power.
- If the laptop boots normally, the issue is likely with the battery itself.
4. Consider a Battery Replacement
- If the battery is failing, you can find genuine HP replacement batteries on HP’s parts store or third-party sellers like Amazon or eBay.
- You can also check Microsoft’s troubleshooting guide here for additional fixes.
If you’re unable to open the laptop yourself, a local repair shop might be able to assist with safely replacing the battery. Let me know if you need help finding a reliable repair service!
