HP Pavilion Gaming - 15-dk0028ns
Microsoft Windows 11

Hi there guys, I have an HP 15 dk0028ns with following specs:

nvme samsung pm981a

intel i5 9300h

gtx 1660ti max q

This model is a laptop and I noticed that my processor can't access deeper C states after the update resulting in an idle consume of 0.8 the lowest. Before it could go to C8 and get 0.4 w. It may not seem a lot but it does make a huge difference.

Does somebody else get the same problem? All my drivers are updated through windows update and it was working fine with the old windows 11 build

Considering that this windows 11 build has been on the beta channel for a long time and that this builds are no secret and are public for everyone to use maybe, just maybe, should the manufacturers make sure that the components work as expected and try to push updates to the windows update process. Not everything is on the Microsoft side. If an installation fails it's clearly a bug of the operative system but if can be installed but the drivers don't work properly, then that's on the manufacturer side, in this case HP.

Anyway, for anyone having this problem, and maybe you do and you didn't notice... just go here and download the latest drivers for the ethernet port on our motherboard from realtek: Realtek PCIe FE / GBE / 2.5G / Gaming Ethernet Family Controller Software - REALTEK

Select the file: "Win11 Auto Installation Program (NetAdapterCx)"

After installing it your CPU should be able to reach C8 again and iddle and the 0.5 w that it should.

Now, i wonder if HP will ever bother to update his drivers page, because it is absolutely not posted there and the driver autodetection tool doesn't work for this driver, as it thinks it is already using the proper one, which in this case is false. HP should update this because otherwise lots of users are going to experience bad battery life and consider that their laptops are malfunctioning.... this is  silent problem, because a common user wouldn't be able to know that the CPU is not using the C-States correctly and therefore I consider this pretty important to fix, in case anyone is this forum can make this reach the department it should, please, please, do.

Hello @adrisanchiner

Sorry to hear that you are having problems ... I would like to help you.

(1In most cases, the simplest "workaround" :

=> Use Windows Restore to return to the restore point (date) >>> before <<< the problem occurred !

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-use-system-restore-windows-11

See section < How to undo changes using System Restore on Windows 11 >

(2Please report your results

While that is a workaround I don't consider that to be a solution. Like I am saying the problem is reproducible within the last windows 11 22h2 update and this update is the newest version of the operating system. This is clearly a problem with drivers and I would be very disappointed if HP didn't provide updated drivers because that the CPU enter properly into the deep C-states is considered basic functionality in a laptop...

Hello @adrisanchiner

You should know that especially new Windows builds contain bugs and are delivered to the annoyance of the users! It is always advisable to wait some time after the rollout until at least the most important bugs are fixed. Furthermore the question arises to me, which "actual" benefit you have to use 22h2 ? I leave the decision to you.

Please contact the HP support. A competent HP technician should provide you an update/fix. If this is not the case, it makes no sense to continue the 22h2 experiment.

Kind regards

@adrisanchiner

FYI

Yesterday I spent time to upgrade 4 Windows 11 machines, all failed (HP and Dell). Sounds like I jumped to the boat too early before Microsoft fixing few bugs.

Regards.

Adrisanchiner,

you should mark your post as solution so that others know how this problem can be fixed.

I'm the first one to badmouth HP about their badly written drivers and firmware, but I think you're not being completely fair here. I've had other brands of laptops (especially Dells and Lenovos) come with 0% C-states OUT OF THE BOX and with NO updates made yet. Plus C-states can be lost simply due to an Antivirus misbehaving (Kaspersky) or even intel cpu bugs....

I don't think saying other manufacturer do worse is doing any favor anyone here. I just reported a bug, then self fixed it looking for myself on the internet and reported it on the official forum of the brand. If there is any other channel to report such thing for HP I am afraid that it is unknown to me, but I would do be happy to do it if someone knows any other channel.

Anyway, I am marking it as solved, If someone does look it up I hope they come across this post or the one I did on reddit but for the common use he is just going to need he need a new device and that's where I thing any brand should do better. The drivers page is not that difficult to keep up to date.
