Hi @Marc4s,

Welcome to the HP Forums! 🙂
I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand that you are facing windows activation issue even after resetting it to factory settings.

I will be glad to help you with your Compaq Presario CQ71-420ED Notebook PC.

I found the below steps on a third party website and it does help.

  • Step 1: Click on Windows logo and enter ‘slui.exe 4’ into the search box.
  • Step 2: From the search list, click on ‘slui.exe 4’.
  • Step 3: From the drop down list, choose the country you are residing now. Select the right one to avoid crazy phone bills.
  • Step 4: Call the designated toll-free number; SMS is the better choice because of the extremely long code. Enter the number accordingly and your Windows 7 shall be validated in a moment.

You also refer to this HP article to try other ways of activating windows.

Keep me posted with the outcome.

Cheers! 🙂

Hi @Marc4s,

Thanks for your reply!

Well, the steps mentioned in the previous post will only work with a genuine version of windows.

There are two methods for activating Windows 7:

Windows Product Activation (WPA) sends an installation ID number to Microsoft before Windows is verified and then activated. WPA involves two numbers. One is an Installation ID (generated by entering a Windows 7 product key) that the notebook owner submits to Microsoft, either

over the Internet or by phone. The second is a Confirmation ID, assigned by Microsoft, which is used to activate the operating system’s software. This method is used when upgrading or installing Windows 7 from disc (not HP System Recovery).

System Locked Pre-Installation (SLP) takes place at the factory. No intervention is required to activate the operating system software before initial use. With SLP-activated systems, most of the computer's hardware can be replaced without needing to re-activate the software through Microsoft.

Keep me posted.

Have a great day! 🙂

This is a genuine version of windows , it came with the computer (OEM) .

After "factory reset" it should be no problem to activate it unless it is an illegal version.

And thats wats happening , when I activate , I get the message - not a legal version . . .

I know several ways to bypass this problem or getting a working key .

The issu is that I should not have to do that.

I reached out to microsoft , and thiy are willing to help me out , the cheapest way to hep me is bij a calling apointment , because !!!!!! they dont have a mailadress ?????.  So it would cost me aprox 5 days to have te first appointment , end approx 10 days to have one that would be convinieent.

The most obvious would be that HP would help me out , becouse it is theyre produckt .

And you can reach them by manny ways on social media , and bij phone , but they also seem not to gave a mail adress or working webform.

So I deleted slui.exe and rearmd bij command
