HP ZBook 15 G5 Mobile Workstation IDS Base Model

My HP ZBook 15 G5 BIOS has been super unstable lately. In the BIOS I am not able to even move the mouse properly or use arrow keys to navigate in the BIOS I have no OS on the PC

I want to use the BIOS to boot from another USB to install Windows.

Is there a way to boot from the other USB to install the OS

Really appreciate any detailed help or step-by-step instructions. Thanks a ton!

Welcome to HP Support Community!

We noticed that this thread hasn't had any updates in a while since your original post; while this is rare, we didn't want this post to remain unanswered, so, here's the solution to your query. We hope it helps you and everyone viewing this post 😊

Thanks for explaining the situation so clearly — that sounds incredibly frustrating, especially when you're trying to get a clean OS install going and the BIOS itself is acting up. Let’s walk through a few steps that can help you boot from USB and, if needed, recover or update the BIOS using another PC.

🛠️ Step 1: Try Booting from USB (Even with Glitchy BIOS)

Even if the BIOS interface is laggy, you might still be able to trigger the boot menu directly:

  1. Insert your bootable Windows USB into the ZBook.
  2. Power it on and immediately start tapping Esc repeatedly.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F9 to open the Boot Device Options.
  4. Use the arrow keys (if they respond) to select your USB drive and press Enter.

If the arrow keys don’t work at all, try plugging in an external USB keyboard — sometimes that bypasses internal keyboard glitches in BIOS.

💾 Step 2: Update BIOS Using Another PC

If the BIOS is too unstable to navigate, you can update it using another working PC:

  1. On the working PC, go to HP’s BIOS download page for the ZBook 15 G5.
  2. Download the latest BIOS .exe file.
  3. Run the file and choose “Create Recovery USB” when prompted.
  4. Insert the USB into the ZBook.
  5. With the laptop off, hold Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds.
  6. Release the power button but keep holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
  7. If successful, the BIOS recovery screen should appear and begin flashing the BIOS.

This method works even if the BIOS interface is unresponsive, as long as the embedded controller is still functional.

🧯 If It Bricks or Freezes Completely

If the screen stays black or the system doesn’t respond at all:

  • Try the BIOS Crisis Recovery again with a freshly created USB.
  • If that fails, the BIOS chip may need to be reflashed externally using a programmer like CH341A — a repair shop with board-level tools can usually handle this.

Let me know if you’d like help finding the exact BIOS file or creating the recovery USB — I’ll guide you through it step by step. You’re doing all the right things so far, and we’ll get this sorted.
