By default the function keys on the HP Envy carry out specific functions — Keyboard lighting and sound levels among them. To get to the “direct” function key roles, one either uses the Fn key along with the function key, or assigns the “standard function” for the keys in the BIOS at startup.
Since that doesn’t always seem to “stick” it has to be re-done intermittently.
I don’t suppose there is any utility or command string to “set” the BIOS without having to go through the steps at startup each time, is there?

Hi @CWBillow3,
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding setting function keys on HP Envy laptops!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
The function keys on HP Envy laptops can perform specific tasks like adjusting keyboard lighting and sound levels. However, you can set them to perform standard function key roles (F1, F2, etc.) through the BIOS settings. If the BIOS settings don't "stick," it may need to be redone periodically.
While there is no direct utility or command string to set the BIOS without rebooting, you can change the function key behavior from Windows by altering the BIOS settings more efficiently. Here's how you can reconfigure the function keys on your HP Envy laptop:
Steps to Change Function Key Behavior in BIOS
Access BIOS Settings:
- Restart your laptop.
- During the startup, press F10 repeatedly to enter the BIOS setup. (Alternatively, it might be Esc or another function key depending on your model.)
Navigate to Advanced Settings:
- Use the arrow keys to navigate to the System Configuration or Advanced tab.
- Look for an option labeled Action Keys Mode or Function Key Behavior.
Change Function Key Behavior:
- Toggle the setting to either Disabled (which will enable standard function keys without needing to press Fn) or Enabled depending on your preference.
- Save the changes and exit the BIOS setup.
Using HP Support Applications
If settings in the BIOS don't persist, you can use the HP Support Assistant to check for BIOS updates that might correct this issue:
Install HP Support Assistant:
- Download and install the HP Support Assistant if it's not already installed.
- HP Support Assistant Download
Check for BIOS Updates:
- Open HP Support Assistant.
- Navigate to the Updates section.
- Check if there is a BIOS update available for your laptop model and install any pending updates.
I hope this helps.
