Spectre X360
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Note: I have opened a thread for this issue on the Microsoft community forum,  but the dozen or so people reporting having similar issues are all running on HP.

Problem:

Following the install of KB4556799 and KB4552931, after the reboot, the X360 BSOD'd twice in 10 minutes. Each time, I was in a browser (Firefox for the 1st BSOD and Chrome for the 2nd one. )

I could not see what the error message was as the BSOD screen with the frowning face flashed too quickly.

I immediately uninstalled both updates and the problem disappeared.

Anyone having problems with those Win10 updates?

Hi!

I've got the same issues with some ProDesk 290 G2

I resolved unistall KB4556799 for 2 machines but in one of them, I had to restore the system from a restore point.

I afraid for all my 290G2 PCs, about 20.

I stopped the updates for the moment.

Big News! I MAY HAVE FOUND A FIX !!!!! >> Solution: Reinstall the Wireless driver.

After uninstalling KB4556799 and KB4552931, the OS was stable for a few days them started again to BSOD again.

In addition, it would sometimes tell me there was no OS drive and could not reboot.

*BUT* I noticed that the BSOD only happened when I was connected to my Wi-Fi. I disconnected the Wi-Fi and worked off-line for half a day and no BSOD 😊!

(Note: I could not hardwire my notebook as it does not have any RJ45 connector ☹)

So, I reinstalled the Intel Wireless Intel driver and the problem disappeared for good.

And since I was at it, I reinstalled all the drivers available for that notebook  (HP Spectre X360) on the HP support site.

Important: I still have *NOT* reinstalled KB4556799 and  KB4552931.

Not sure if I will.

This problem is really, really bizarre. It is as if KB4556799 installed some worm that is eating away the OS.
Every time I make a change, it fixes the BSOD problem for a few days then the BSOD comes back.
Last action: I did a fresh install from the recovery partition and postponed any Windows update for 30 days. So far, 2 days without a BSOD.

Here are the symptoms I saw and the actions I took.
1. A few minutes after installing KB4556799 and KB4552931, my HP Spectre X360 notebook started to BSOD every 5 minutes. (No memory dump was generated). About half of the time, the reboot would fail with a “No OS Installed” message. I uninstalled the two updates and the problem disappeared for a couple of days. Then, it came back.

2. Through trial and error, I figured out that the BSOD occurred ONLY when I was connected to the Wifi. I first suspected the browsers (See my previous posts) . I removed first Chrome then FireFox. Each time, I got no BSOD for a couple of days then it came back (BSOD every 5 minutes and “No OS installed” when booting.)

3. I uninstalled then reinstalled the Wireless driver (See my previous post). This time, no BSOD for 4 days then the problem came back.

Finally, I decided to reinstall the OS from the recovery partition, but this time, I turned off the Windows Update. Let's knock on wood...

I have a similar problem. My HP Spectre running Windows 10 has rebooted abruptly 4 times in the last two weeks, or so (perhaps all since an update a few weeks ago). A momentary message appears saying something like "Your PC has run into a problem and needs to reboot". It does not seem to be caused by my actions: the disk still has 50GB free, and I was not running memory intensive activities. The first time it occurred, there was a boot failure and I had to power down holding the power button to reboot. The subsequent three failures have rebooted successfully, with no notification of a problem. I may have been running Visual Studio each of the four times. I was likely running Chrome all 4 times. After the last failure, Visual Studio started with a message that Visual Studio was interrpupted by an update and that I could recover my files. I did recover my files. My Windows update log reports the salt updates on May 13 for KB4552931 and KB4556799.

Looks like MS acknowledged there was a problem and a fix (by HP)  is supposed to be rolled in the next Windows update.
Here is one of the many links that talks about it: (just google BSOD + KB4556799 🙂

Note: I may be adventurous but I am not reckless - I will wait at least another month before resuming automatic Windows updates.

On June 13, Windows update installed the KB4560960 update on my computer. Windows has rebooted twice on me since then. This latest update did not fix the problem for me.

Thanks for the update. I was wondering if the fix was in place - Looks like it is not. 😞

Since I have reinstalled, 3 weeks ago, and stopped all Win10 updates, my notebook has not had a single problem.

I will keep postponing updates until I feel safe.
