I've had this HP14s-dq5 laptop for about 6 months and I'm not using it every day as sometimes I can go a couple of weeks without using it but I'll charge it to 100% and after the few weeks of no use I will turn it on and it will have drained to about 30-35%.

If it's completely shut down should it still drain that much? I have a Microsoft surface that I use and that doesn't drain if left for extended periods. Any ideas or is that just normal

Hi @relly0,

I understand your HP 14s-dq5 laptop battery is draining significantly even when the device is not used for weeks. Let’s go through a few points to explain why this happens and what you can check.

Understand battery drain when the laptop is “shut down”
On many modern HP laptops, shutdown is not a full power-off.
Features like Fast Startup and Modern Standby allow small background power draw, which can drain the battery over time.

Check and disable Fast Startup
Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do.
Click Change settings that are currently unavailable and uncheck Turn on fast startup.

Confirm the laptop is fully shut down
Use Shut down (not Sleep or Hibernate), or hold Shift while clicking Shut down.
This forces a deeper power-off state and reduces standby drain.

Check for USB or peripheral power draw
Disconnect all USB devices and SD cards before shutting down.
Some ports can continue drawing power even when the system is off.

Review BIOS battery and power settings
Restart and press F10 to enter BIOS.
Under Power Management, disable USB power in off state or similar options if available.

Compare behavior with normal battery characteristics
Lithium-ion batteries naturally self-discharge over time, typically 2–5% per month.
However, dropping from 100% to ~30% over a few weeks suggests standby power usage rather than normal self-discharge.

Check battery health status
Restart and press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
Run the Battery Test to confirm the battery condition is Normal.

Store the battery at an optimal level
If you won’t use the laptop for weeks, shut it down fully and store it at 50–60% charge.
This minimizes drain and helps preserve long-term battery health.

I hope this helps.
