Hi everyone,
It is a great mourn for me that I have certain challenges with the battery indicator of my hp laptop. The indicator only demonstrates that the battery is 100 percent and then suddenly drops when its energy runs out. The main problem here is that I could not see the exact percentage of the battery. How can I repair the indicator?
Any help, support, useful information you share would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!
Best regards,

Hi @MrHasanov,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
The issue you're experiencing with the battery indicator on your HP laptop, where it shows 100% and then suddenly drops when the battery runs out, is often related to a calibration problem. The battery is likely not accurately reporting its charge to the operating system.
Here are some steps to troubleshoot and fix the battery indicator:
1. Battery Calibration
Over time, your laptop's battery can lose its ability to accurately report the charge level. Calibrating the battery can help restore accuracy.
Steps to Calibrate the Battery:
Charge the Battery Fully:
- Plug in your laptop and charge it to 100%. Once it reaches full charge, leave it connected for about 1-2 hours to ensure the battery is completely charged.
Unplug and Drain the Battery:
- Disconnect the charger and let the laptop run on battery power until it shuts down automatically due to low battery. Make sure you don't plug it in during this step.
Leave the Laptop Powered Off:
- Let the laptop sit powered off for at least 3-4 hours to allow the battery to fully drain.
Recharge to 100%:
- Plug in the charger again and allow the battery to charge to 100% without interruption. Do not use the laptop while it's charging.
Check the Battery Indicator:
- After charging, unplug the laptop and see if the battery indicator shows a more accurate charge level.
2. Update Battery Drivers
Outdated or corrupt battery drivers can cause issues with the battery indicator.
Steps to Update Battery Drivers:
Open Device Manager:
- Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
Update Drivers:
- Expand the Batteries section.
- Right-click on both Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
Restart the Laptop:
- After updating the drivers, restart your laptop and check if the battery indicator is functioning correctly.
Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @MrHasanov ,
Please find the remaining steps below.
3. Perform a Power Reset
A power reset can help resolve battery issues caused by residual power or software glitches.
Steps to Perform a Power Reset:
Shut Down the Laptop:
- Turn off the laptop completely.
Remove the Battery (if removable):
- If your HP laptop has a removable battery, take it out. If it's non-removable, just leave the laptop off.
Drain Power:
- Press and hold the Power button for 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
Reconnect the Battery and Charger:
- Reinsert the battery (if removable) and plug in the charger.
- Turn on the laptop and check the battery indicator.
4. Run HP Diagnostic Tool
HP laptops often come with built-in diagnostic tools to check the health of hardware components, including the battery.
Steps to Run HP Diagnostics:
Restart the Laptop and press F2 repeatedly as the laptop boots to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
Run the Battery Test:
- Select Component Tests > Power > Battery Test.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to test the health of your battery.
- If the battery fails the test, it may need to be replaced.
5. Check for BIOS Updates
Sometimes, a bug in the BIOS can cause battery reporting issues. Updating the BIOS may resolve this problem.
Steps to Update the BIOS:
Visit the HP Support Website:
- Go to the HP Support page.
- Search for your laptop model and download the latest BIOS update.
Follow the Instructions:
- Carefully follow the installation instructions provided on the website, as updating the BIOS improperly can cause other issues.
6. Consider Replacing the Battery
If none of the above solutions work, your battery may be deteriorating, and the cells might no longer report their charge correctly. If the laptop is older, replacing the battery with a new, genuine HP battery could resolve the issue.
Keep me posted for further assistance
