Is it the original battery? HP Support Assistant has a battery test app you can try to run which will give the number of cycles on the battery and the health of each cell.
On a laptop of that age it is likely you need a new battery.

For use with all computer models:
9-cell, 93-Wh, 2.80-Ah Li-ion battery for use with all computer models 593550-001
6-cell, 62-Wh, 2.80-Ah Li-ion battery for use with all computer models 593562-001
6-cell, 55-Wh, 2.55-Ah Li-ion battery for use with all computer models 593554-001
Above is genuine, new 6 cell. The 9 cell will bulge out a bit from the chassis but obviously provides longer runtime.
Lots of 3rd party replacement batteries (not genuine HP) available on eBay for around $20 if you search under any of the above parts numbers. The only genuine new 9 cell I found was $135 which I assume you do not want to spend.
