Battery will not charge

Hi @Jamesmc213,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how concerning this can feel, especially when the laptop is connected to power, but the battery still refuses to charge. With gaming systems like the HP OMEN, the battery and charging system work closely with the BIOS and power management controls, so a charging issue does not always mean the battery itself has failed. We can start with a few important checks to help narrow this down.

First, I would recommend performing a BIOS restore/recovery, as this can refresh the hardware communication between the battery, adapter, and motherboard.

BIOS Restore / Recovery

  1. Shut down the laptop completely and keep the charger plugged in.
  2. While the laptop is powered off, press and hold the Windows + B keys together.
  3. While holding those keys, press the Power button once.
  4. Continue holding Windows + B until the BIOS Recovery screen appears.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions and click OK to complete the recovery.

Once the laptop restarts, please check whether the battery begins charging normally again.

If the issue continues, the next step would be to perform a battery calibration. Sometimes the battery percentage and charging behavior become out of sync, and calibration helps the system read the battery status correctly again.

Battery Calibration

  1. Charge the battery as much as possible while the laptop is turned off.
  2. Disconnect the charger and use the laptop normally until the battery drains to a very low percentage and the system shuts down.
  3. Leave the laptop powered off for about 30 minutes.
  4. Reconnect the charger and allow the battery to charge uninterrupted to 100% do this 3 times.

After calibration, please test whether the battery holds a charge and charges properly.

Finally, I would also recommend running the HP Battery Test to check the overall battery health.

Battery Test

  1. Turn off the laptop.
  2. Turn it back on and immediately tap the Esc key repeatedly.
  3. When the Startup Menu appears, press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI).
  4. Select Component Tests > Power > Battery.
  5. Allow the test to complete.

Once the test finishes, please share the test result or any Failure ID shown on the screen, and we’ll help you further from there.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
