Hi. My HP stream suddenly stopped charging. It's on 47% when I keep it plugged in but not charging. It's only 2 years old. I've tried the reset and uninstalling the  battery driver. Can anyone please help.

Hi @Linda2mo

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how worrying it feels when the laptop refuses to charge even though you’ve already tried a reset and reinstalled the battery driver. Thank you for taking those steps—it shows real persistence.

Let’s now go through a more complete set of checks together to help restore charging:

Step 1: Check the AC Adapter and Port

  • Ensure the adapter is firmly connected to both the wall socket and the laptop.
  • Inspect the cable and connector for any bends, frays, or looseness.
  • If possible, test with another compatible HP adapter to rule out a power supply issue.

Step 2: Perform a Hard Reset

  1. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove all external devices.
  2. Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
  3. Reconnect the adapter and try powering on again.

Step 3: Battery Reset (Internal Battery Models)

  • Some HP Stream laptops have a pinhole reset on the underside.
  • Insert a paperclip gently into the pinhole and hold for 5–10 seconds.
  • Connect the adapter and check if charging resumes.

Step 4: Run Hardware Diagnostics

  1. Turn off the laptop completely.
  2. Press the power button and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
  3. The HP PC Hardware Diagnostics screen should appear.
  4. Run the Battery Test and AC Adapter Test.
  5. Follow the on‑screen instructions to identify any issues.

Step 5: Update BIOS and Drivers

  • Outdated BIOS or system drivers can affect charging behavior.
  • Visit HP Software and Driver Downloads
  • Enter your HP Stream model, then download and install the latest BIOS and chipset drivers.

Step 6: Battery Calibration

  1. Charge the laptop fully until the light indicates 100%.
  2. Disconnect the adapter and let the battery drain completely until the laptop shuts down.
  3. Recharge it uninterrupted back to 100%.
  4. This helps recalibrate the battery sensor.

Step 7: Test on Windows Power Settings

  1. Go to Start > Settings > System > Power & Battery.
  2. Check if the battery status shows “Plugged in, not charging.”
  3. If so, try changing the Power Mode to Balanced or Best Performance and observe if charging resumes.

These steps should help isolate whether the issue lies with the adapter, battery, or system settings. Since you’ve already tried uninstalling the battery driver, I’d recommend focusing next on diagnostics and BIOS updates—they often resolve stubborn charging issues.

Hi Hawks eye

Thanks so much for your lengthy reply. Unfortunately,  none of these solutions have worked. There is no charge whatsoever going into my laptop,  even with a different adaptor.  I'm at a loss and have had to order a new laptop.  I didn't expect it to stop charging after only 2 years because I only use it for travelling.  My 'home ' laptop has had no problems and has been used constantly for over 3 years.

Many thanks

Linda
