When you are in Recovery Manager do NOT chooose Microsoft System Restore. Choose System Recovery.
Btw,it sounds like your hard drive is close to failing and will have to be replaced soon. If you get back up and running I suggest using Recovery Manager to make Recovery Media.

The "smart drive error" you mentioned...try running Diagnostics on the hard drive. Immediately after powering on start tapping the F2 key.

Don't forget the Smart error warning, the fact is has been tripped is a warning of a failure being detected. The disk may test ok using diagnostics, but an issue is being reported. All hard drives fail sooner or later- the message is quite clear- you need to keep a back up your data and be prepared to replace the drive at some point. It could be 6 months-it could be next week.
