So my laptop randomly went into firmware update the other day and black screened. I thought my motherboard was bricked until I really started trying to solve what happened today. The fans are turning on and I've tried a usb flash, the fans kicked on even more and then the bios corruption screen popped up, a few minutes later it booted to the screen system bios is being updated, flashing bootblock back up region, flashing psp apob backup region, and flashing psp back up region. It's still on and has been for the past 45 minutes where I'm just letting it sit, it's currently still in a black screen. Any idea/help would be wonderful!

Hi @Enigma7k,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP laptop is in the middle of a BIOS recovery and firmware flashing process, which can take a long time depending on the system and the extent of the corruption.
The messages you saw:
- “System BIOS is being updated”
- “Flashing bootblock backup region”
- “Flashing PSP APOB backup region”
- “Flashing PSP backup region”
...indicate that the system is performing a deep-level BIOS recovery, including restoring secure boot and platform security processor (PSP) firmware. This is common after a failed BIOS update or corruption.
What You Should Do
1. Let It Finish
- These processes can take 30–90 minutes or more.
- If the fans are running and the system hasn’t shut down, it’s likely still working.
- Do not power off or unplug the laptop unless it’s been stuck for over 2 hours with no change.
2. Check for Signs of Progress
- Look for changes in fan speed, keyboard backlight, or screen flicker.
- If the screen remains black but the fans change behavior, it may be preparing to reboot.
If it’s been over 2 hours with no change:
- Force Shutdown: Hold the power button for 10–15 seconds.
- Try BIOS Recovery Again:
- Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
- Release the power button, but keep holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
- Wait to see if the BIOS recovery screen appears.
- Use a BIOS Recovery USB:
- On another PC, download the BIOS update for your laptop from HP’s support site.
- Create a recovery USB using HP’s instructions.
- Insert it into your laptop and try the recovery again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have an amazing day!
