My laptop ran into an issue, restarted and went into BIOS but seemingly froze so I took out the battery and charger and now it’s in a loop of turning on going into BIOS with only the word Initializing and then it will shut off. It has been doing this for hours now.

Hi @Mothmon

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand the situation. The system is caught in a BIOS initialization loop, and we need to carefully apply recommended recovery steps to restore normal startup.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect the charger and remove any external devices.
  • Hold the power button for about 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect only the charger (leave the battery out if removable) and try powering on.

Initiate BIOS Recovery

  • With the laptop powered off, press and hold the Windows key + B.
  • While holding these keys, press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds, then release the Power button but keep holding Windows + B until the BIOS recovery screen appears.
  • If successful, the system will attempt to reload the BIOS.

Use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

  • If the system boots into diagnostics, run the System Test and BIOS Test to confirm hardware integrity.
  • This will help verify if the BIOS update is recoverable.

Update BIOS via USB Recovery Drive

  • On another PC, go to HP’s official support page: HP BIOS Recovery
  • Create a BIOS recovery USB drive using the instructions provided.
  • Insert the USB into your laptop and repeat the Windows + B recovery process to reload the BIOS from the USB.

After Recovery

  • Once the BIOS is restored, restart the system and allow it to complete initialization.
  • Open the HP App in Windows and check for updates to ensure the BIOS and drivers are current.

These steps are designed to bring the system out of the loop and restore proper BIOS functionality. If the recovery completes successfully, the laptop should resume normal startup.

Take care, and have an amazing day!

It didn’t work. I followed these instructions and the laptop still goes through the loop of turning on, HDD light flashes a few times, the backlights on the screen turns on for a few seconds, no windows logo appears, it goes straight into the BIOS update screen with only the word initializing, then shuts off and the loop repeats. Nothing I do stops it. I can’t get into diagnostics, there’s nothing to interact with. Not even a cursor to move around.
I did download a BIOS update on to a flash drive with a different laptop to see if it would fix my laptop, and the BIOS update screen does stay on for a few seconds longer but it still doesn’t work, I am unable to interact with the diagnostics and the loop persist.
