So - did you know that hp activate Bitlocker encryption when they install Windows on your laptop and don’t let you know to save your key in your MS account? So the motherboard died in my 7 month old laptop - I’m told over and over to back up which of course you can’t do when your motherboard is dead. When it’s finally sent back I can’t even get past the Bitlocker screen. So now I have to create a USB forced start but of course I don’t have a laptop to do that on. The service chat has been appalling today and got me nowhere. Ready to give up on hp.

Hi @Susan322,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding handling BitLocker recovery and access to encrypted drives!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

1. Retrieve Your BitLocker Recovery Key

  • Microsoft Account: First, check your Microsoft account for the BitLocker recovery key.
  • Document and Emails: Review any documentation or emails from when you originally set up your device. There might be information about your BitLocker key.

2. Create a BitLocker Recovery USB Drive

  • Borrow Another Computer: Borrow another computer to create the necessary USB drive.
  • Recovery Media: Follow these steps to create a BitLocker recovery USB drive:
    1. Insert a USB drive into another computer.
    2. Download the Windows 10 Media Creation Tool.
    3. Run the tool and select “Create installation media for another PC”.
    4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

I hope this helps.
