Issue overhere with a brand new HP Pavilion Power - 15-cb040nd (delivery date 2017 sep 9).

When I log in after 1st Windows update I see a black screen with white cursor. System is responsive (eg task manager can be opened via ctrl-alt-del)

After 5 minutes the black screen disappears, the desktop is loaded and everything runs fine. After each reboot of windows same issue with black screen.

Already performed a HP system recovery but same problem again after windows update. Contacted HP support today, they advised to return the laptop. However I am wondering if problem will also occur with mee replacement laptop, which will have the same image I guess

Got a bunch of new G6 laptops today, while preparing them I noticed the same symptoms described above on one of them. Reset using system restore and all seemed well. Now I have noticed the same thing happen on another!?

Cant pin it down to a specific windows update yet but begining to wonder whats causing this? Updated graphics driver - no difference. Changed power settings - no difference. 5 mins of black before desktop appears.

Can you try removing and reinstalling the HP HIDClass driver that was delivered as part of the update? I'm sure it's the Wireless Button driver.  It's avaialble as a softpack for your machine, or maybe remove and let windows reinstall it???

I removed and reinstalled the HP Wireless Button Driver from the device manager but still a black screen

What happens if you remove it from device manager, and take the option to delete the driver too, then install the softpack from support? Does it still leave you in the same position?

I followed the proposed route but still black screen. Funny thing is that in Windows safe mode the desktop loads immediately (no black screen and 5 minutes wait time)

Weird. OK.... work around, while HP look into this.... boot machine and log in. Wait for 10 mins or so and the desktop will/should appear.

Go into power settings, and set "Hibernate" when closing lid.

This will at least give you a quick shutdown/start up time.

Not sure which update breaks it now. I suspected the Wireless button, but who knows.

Ok, for the time being I will use the workaround to use hibernation mode

My daughters laptop just updated and is broken again.  Even uninstalled the update... still broken. I'm back to Hibernating too

Quick update:

I spent over two hours on the tech support chat today to finally be told that its a 'known issue' with Creators build that is causing the problem. Total waste of my time. So frustrating. Hate being led up the garden path on this one. How many people have wiped their drive to get a very temporary fix?

I currently have four brand new out the box all showing the same fault. No consolation if you just bought a product which they knew was going to have a fault within the first day!

They are sending out a new HP image on disk to try as a solution instead of the potentially dodgy recovery partion,  rather than waste any more time wiping the drive. Dont knw why they dont just post a link to it for us all to use?

I appreciate that they are at the mercy of WIndows Updates but as gold partners they must be on the front foot testing these releases.

If the striped back image works I might post a link myself.
