In the last month or so, my six month old HP Spectre suddenly started giving me a black screen after signing in. Why is it doing this all of a sudden? I see someone else here with a Spectre had the same thing happen to them in February. It seems to have started after HP support assistant updated and had me restart. If I do the Windows key+shift+control+B it doesn't solve it. I have a cursor, but when I try to use ctrl+alt+delete and it gives me the option to open the task manager, it doesn't bring it up. I've tried esc as well. So, I have to wait a couple of minutes and then the normal desktops appears. What's going on? I can't rollback the driver because that's not an option(it's grayed out.) So how can I fix this?

@Wolfwoman7 A recent update in the background if interrupted could have caused the issue, and I suggest we perform the below steps to resolve it:
- Let's perform a power reset as per HP standards:
- Ensure your laptop is OFF.
- Unplug all the external devices (If any).
- Disconnect the power charger from the computer, and remove the battery.
- Press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds.
- Connect the power supply (power adapter).
- Press the power button to turn on your laptop.
- Then put your battery back.

If the device still doesn't boot, try booting into safe mode using these steps: click here,
If it boots into windows now, try the below steps:
- On your keyboard, press the Ctrl, Shift and Esc keys at the same time to invoke Task Manager.
- Click the Details tab (or the Processes tab if you’re using Windows 7).
- Scroll down and find the explorer.exe process.
- If yes, end the process by selecting explorer.exe and clicking End task.
- Restart your HP laptop and see if it fixes the black screen issues.
If you can’t find explorer.exe in the list, you can run the process on your own:
- Still in Task Manager, click File and select Run new task.
- Type explorer.exe and press Enter on your keyboard.
- The process will run and you can check if your desktop becomes normal.

Also, my PC does boot. I can sign in. Once I sign in, the screen turns black for a few minutes before bringing up the desktop. I looked for new drivers for the display, and tried to update it because I cannot roll back the drivers. I performed every suggestion Microsoft gave me. Nothing changes the black screen issue, and from searching online it seems to be a common issue on HP laptops.

@Wolfwoman7 I understand your concern, the steps I suggest are valid for your circumstance, I suggest you click on the link shared earlier, it contains the steps to perform a hard reset on a device with non-removable battery as well, once done, follow the rest of the steps to resolve the issue.
Keep me posted,
and Good luck!

@Wolfwoman7 Since booting into regular windows isn't working, did you follow the steps suggested to access the safe mode? if not, please do that,
And I know the steps looks overwhelming, but I've only inserted the ones that will give you complete end to end support, just take a deep breath and read all of it once, before you try it on your computer, if you need anything else, feel free to write to us, we'll be happy to help!
Good luck!
