@harvey111, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I'm sorry to hear you're experiencing a black screen issue with your HP laptop. Let's work through this together.

You mentioned that after turning on your laptop:

  • The screen remains black
  • There are no fan noises
  • No startup sounds or HP logo appears

This typically indicates a power or hardware-level issue. Here are some steps to help diagnose and potentially resolve it.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting:

Perform a Hard Reset

This helps drain residual electrical charge and can resolve startup issues.

For laptops with removable battery:

  1. Turn off the laptop and unplug the power adapter.
  2. Remove the battery.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reinsert the battery and plug in the power adapter.
  5. Try turning it on again.

For laptops with non-removable battery:

  1. Turn off the laptop and unplug the power adapter.
  2. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  3. Plug the adapter back in and try powering on.

Check Power Supply and LED Indicators

  • Ensure the power adapter is working (try a different one if available).
  • Look for any LED lights near the charging port or keyboard.
    • No lights at all? The issue may be with the power supply or motherboard.
    • Blinking lights? These can indicate specific hardware errors.

Try an External Display

To rule out a screen issue:

  • Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV via HDMI or VGA.
  • Power on the laptop and press F4 (or Fn + F4) to toggle display modes.

If the external display works, the issue may be with the laptop screen or display cable.

BIOS Recovery (if applicable)

Some HP laptops support BIOS recovery even when the screen is black.

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the Power button for 2-3 seconds.
  • Release all keys and wait. If successful, you may hear beeps and see the BIOS recovery screen.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
