I had a laptop given to me and the owner doesn’t remember the password so he told me i could do a factory reset. When i tried this i got a blue screen that just restarted the computer. I tried pressing pressing F11 and i turned it on and when i saw the hp logo powered it back on three times and still nothing

Hi @SoberMom0630,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

I understand how  that must feel, especially when you’re just trying to get the laptop ready to use.Dont worry let me help you with this.

Could you please share the exact HP laptop model ?

Here are a few  steps you can try in the meantime:

  1. Access Recovery Environment: Turn off the laptop completely. Then power it on and immediately start pressing the Esc key repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears. From there, press F11 to enter System Recovery.
  2. Use Windows Recovery: If F11 doesn’t work, try holding the Shift key while selecting Restart from the login screen (if you can reach it). This should bring up advanced recovery options.
  3. Check BIOS Settings: Sometimes the recovery partition is disabled. Restart the laptop, press F10 to enter BIOS, and check if the recovery option is enabled.
  4. Create Recovery Media: If none of the above works, you may need to use another computer to create a Windows installation USB or HP Recovery Media, then boot from it to reset the system.
(Kindly ensure all the data is backed up before initiating a reset)
Also if you could kindly share if there is any error code flashing on the screen,  if the above steps doesnt resolve the issue.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
