I have an old laptop broken during a move. The glass is cracked and I can access data. Is there a way to transfer data to my new laptop?

@Oracle6,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Yes, you can still transfer your data from the broken laptop to your new one, even if the screen is cracked. Here are a few methods, depending on the condition of the old laptop:

1. External Display (if laptop still powers on):

  • Connect an external monitor or TV using HDMI or VGA.

  • Power on the old laptop; if it still works, you can access your files and transfer them using:

    • USB flash drive or external hard drive

    • Cloud storage (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, etc.)

    • Direct transfer over Wi-Fi using file sharing or a transfer cable

2. Remove the Hard Drive (if laptop doesn’t power on or screen is unusable):

  • Remove the hard drive from the old laptop.

  • Use a USB-to-SATA adapter or external hard drive enclosure to connect the old drive to your new laptop or a different PC via USB.

  • Your old drive should show up like an external drive, and you can copy files over.

If the data is critical and you’re uncomfortable opening the laptop, a local computer repair shop can help extract the drive safely, usually for a small fee.
