15-r005la

My son recently gave me his HP 15-r005la laptop that he somehow managed to totally wipe the harddrive clean. It came with Windows 8. I want to install Windows 7 on it but it will not recognize the installation disks. Is there something I can do or is it just not possible?

Hi:

You should be able to.

You need to go into the BIOS, enable legacy mode and disable secure boot.

W7 is not compatible with secure boot.

See this link for the BIOS settings to change...

Your initial suggestion of enabling legacy and disabling secure didn't help. I went to the link provided and after experimenting I found out that if I hit f9 for boot options instead of going into bios settings AND there was a disk in the drive, internal dvd drive option appeared. On selecting it the unit began reading the drive and loading Windows. I had to completely delete all partitions and make new ones but it installed and seems to be working properly so far. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. I guess I should have mentioned the unit was purchased in Mexico so maybe the bios is a bit different. Thanks again.
