3 month old laptopmwould not boot. Followed instructions to reset it by shutting down and pressing f11 on start up. Navigated to reset and it has been stuck on 9% for 5 hours. Any advice? Can I shut it down mid reset? Have tried the HP support number but the office is closed until Tuesday!

@Cjabig

The typical reason that a reset fails is an old and failing hard drive -- as folks expect the reset to work miracle cures, and it does not.  But with a new PC, I would not expect this issue.

You should see if you can make a bootable USB recovery drive using the HP cloud recovery tool on a working PC.

The recovery drive can then be used to install Win10 and the HP drivers and utilities that originally came with your PC.

You will need a working PC and a 8GB USB stick to hold the recovery files.

Thanks for your advice. Does stopping the reset cause further issues or should I just turn the laptop off?

Hi,

You can stop the reset, but most likely you will need to reinstall the OS on the notebook.

Turn off the PC by holding power button and then try starting again, see if the reset continues.

Is there a reason you are performing the reset? Where you have problems with the notebook? First you could check if the Hardware is "good" by performing a fast system test at boot.

Turn off the PC by holding the power button. Turn on PC and repeatedly keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F2 to enter diagnostics. Try the fast test, or at least the hard drive test.

See if there are any hardware errors.

If all is good you can then reinstall the OS. You can follow the advice by @WAWood with HP recovery or my preferred option is to perform a clean install by creating a bootable USB drive from Microsoft site. Here is a small guide:

Download media creation tool from Microsoft on PC (different PC), run and create a bootable pendrive with the OS on it. (there is an explanation on the Microsoft web page on how to create the pendrive). Create the drive with Windows 10 Home 64-bit edition. Windows will automatically activate once installed and connected to the Internet.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

If you choose this option you will need to use the pendrive to perform a clean install of Windows 10. You might need to disable fastboot and secure boot in BIOS (probably not). So, insert the pendrive in the PC and it should boot directly from the drive. If not, turn off the PC by holding the power button. Press the power button and immediately keep pressing ESC until the startup menu appears and then press F9 and choose the pendrive in the boot menu. Once it boots from pendrive follow the procedure to install Windows. Choose custom install and delete all partions. Install in unallocated space.

When finished installing allow Windows to completely update and find all or most drivers. You can follow this process by going into settings > Security and update > click on Verify for updates. You might need to reboot a couple of times.

I recommend installing HP support assistant which will help keep your drivers up to date and much more. You can download the latest version from here.

Once completely updated you can go into device manager and see if there are any missing drivers (there will be yellow exclamation mark next to the device). You can find these drivers and software on HP support page for your product.

Hope it helps,
