It looks like I have a similar problem as other people. I bought my Chromebook in 2018. Today for the first time when plugging in my charger I smelled a burning smell and it started smoking. It was charging earlier this morning without apparent difficulty but abruptly stopped charging. I unplugged and checked to ensure it was still connected to the power outlet which it was. Then I replugged the charger into the Chromebook at which time it started smoking. I unplugged it, check for debris or hair or something (which it was clean) and tried again and had the snake smoking result (both sides). At this time I will not use it again due to safety. I can see others have replaced the charging port. Mine is no longer under warranty. How can I get this fixed? Thank you.
