Hi everyone,

I’m using an HP notebook and recently started facing a performance issue with Google Chrome.

When I open certain websites (including one related to  Chrome sometimes becomes very slow, lags, or partially freezes while loading the page. However, the same websites open smoothly in other browsers like Microsoft Edge.

This issue does not happen all the time, but it occurs randomly, which makes it hard to diagnose.

Here are a few things I’ve noticed:

  • Chrome becomes slow only on some websites
  • Other browsers work fine on the same system
  • Internet connection is stable
  • HP laptop performance is otherwise normal
  • Sometimes page loads halfway, then hangs

I’m trying to understand if this is:

  • A Chrome-specific issue on HP notebooks
  • Hardware acceleration or GPU-related problem
  • Cache or extension conflict
  • OS-level performance issue

Has anyone experienced similar slowdowns or freezing in Chrome on an HP laptop? What should I check or fix?

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Hi @Mikel222222

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details. I acknowledge the issue you are facing with Chrome becoming slow or partially freezing when opening certain websites on your HP notebook.

Since other browsers work fine, this points toward Chrome-specific behavior rather than a system-wide performance concern. Let’s go through structured steps that can help improve Chrome’s performance on your HP device:

Update Chrome Browser

  • Open Chrome.
  • Select the three dots (More) > Help > About Google Chrome.
  • Allow Chrome to check for updates and restart once updated.

Clear Browsing Data

  • In Chrome, go to Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear browsing data.
  • Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data.
  • Click Clear data.

Disable Unnecessary Extensions

  • Go to Settings > Extensions.
  • Turn off or remove extensions not required for your work.

Check System Resources with HP App

  • Open the HP App from your Start menu.
  • Run Diagnose & Fix to check for background processes or performance issues.
  • Apply the recommended fixes.

Update Graphics and System Drivers

  • Open the HP App.
  • Navigate to Updates and install any available driver or BIOS updates.
  • Restart your device after updates are complete.

Adjust Chrome Settings

  • In Settings > System, disable Continue running background apps when Chrome is closed.
  • Also disable Use hardware acceleration when available and restart Chrome.

These steps are designed to optimize Chrome’s performance while ensuring your HP system runs smoothly.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
