I turned my laptop off and when tried to start up the following day it came up with Hard Drive SMART check failure. I have tried turning it off and starting up and then comes up with preparing diagnostic repair but doesn't do anything

Hi:
If you are getting a 24 character hard drive failure code, you will need to replace the hard drive, and reinstall the operating system.
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook, where you can find the hard drive removal and replacement procedure.

After you replace the hard drive, using another Windows PC, you can create a bootable USB recovery drive with the HP Cloud Recovery tool to reinstall W10, the drivers and software that came with your PC.
