Microsoft Windows 11

This laptop has been consistently crashing since yesterday, with no obvious cause. Additionally, the laptop will not allow us to opt out of S Mode.

@JasonO33, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Laptop Crashing

a) Check for Software Issues

Update Windows: Make sure your system is fully updated. Sometimes, an update might fix stability issues.

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and check for updates.

Check for Driver Updates: Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause crashes. Visit the HP website and search for your laptop model to ensure all your drivers are up to date.

Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic: RAM issues can cause random crashes.

Type Windows Memory Diagnostic in the search bar and run the tool.

Check for Malware: Run a full scan with Windows Defender or another antivirus program, as malware can sometimes cause unexpected crashes.

b) Hardware Checks

Overheating: Check if the laptop is overheating, as it can lead to crashes.

Hard Drive/SSD Health: If your drive is failing, it could cause crashes.

If this issue started recently, a system restore might help return your laptop to a stable state.

Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Open System Restore.

Opting Out of S Mode

Windows 10 in S Mode limits you to installing apps only from the Microsoft Store. To switch out of S Mode, you should normally be able to do it via the Settings menu

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

No, none of your suggestions made a difference. The laptop is still crashing every few minutes or as soon as it boots up.

"To switch out of S Mode, you should normally be able to do it via the Settings menu." "Should" being the key word, I have had no luck through the Settings menu, which leads to Activation Settings, which leads to the Microsoft Store, which fails to load every single time. Even going through Regedit from a command prompt in the troubleshooting section of the Recovery screen, is ineffective.

Here is information from a ticket I have open with HP. I was told that an email was being sent to me for resetting the laptop using a "Cloud Restore" option. I was never sent that email and each time I call Customer Support, they want to start all over from the beginning. I need to make progress with this issue. I haven't even heard back from you with my last reply. How can you help me today?

Hey @JasonO33,

Thank you for your response

Apologies for the delay. I see the issue is still ongoing, and that you've already contacted the support team. As they suggested, you can follow this guide to perform the cloud recovery.

We have finally gotten the laptop out of S Mode and have discovered that the crashing is linked to the WiFi adapter somehow. We can be connected to ethernet and the laptop runs fine. However, when we connect through WiFi, the crashing begins and doesn't stop. I'm in the process of troubleshooting the new found issue. Are you familiar with this issue, at all?

Hey @JasonO33,

Thank you for your response

That sounds pretty concerning, especially since the issue seems to be tied to the WiFi adapter itself. While I’m not aware of a specific widespread issue with WiFi adapters causing crashes like this.

I suggest you reach out to the nearest HP Authorised service center for personalized assistance. They can provide one-on-one help to fix the problem.

Note: There might be a nominal charge for the service they provide.
