HP Envy
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (64-bit)

I am getting a DPTF error in my event viewer with the event id 256.

Searching Google I find an Intel forum that directs computer users to contact their computer's manufacturer.

So, what is HP's solution to this error or is there one?

Hi @Sapient,

Thank you for your inquiry, I will do my best to help!

I grasp that you are getting the error " DPTF error in my event viewer with the event id 256". When you googled the error you found a post in the Intel forum which said to contact the vendor. What is your precise model of Envy notebook? HP Notebook PCs - How Do I Find My Model Number, Serial Number or Product Number? Have you done all the Windows updates? Have you run the HP Support Assistant to aid with the recommended HP updates?  Please let me  know if this helped.

The above thread, Dell says it's normal.

Do I buy the answer? Not really, either way HP should fix it.

Hi

I know this problem occured on Win 8.1, but I had (or produced) the same Error on Win 10 and was able to resolve it:

While tampering with Windows Services I suddenly got this DPTF Error 256 to pop up in the Event Viewer at startup. After some trial and error i was able to identify the culprit.

AGAIN, I AM NOT SURE IF THIS WORKS ON WIN 8.1, I AM RUNNING WIN 10.

In short, make sure the following Services are set to defaults as follows:

Connected Devices Platform Service -> Automatic

Connected Devices Platform User Service_xyz -> Automatic

Network Connection Broker -> Manual

'Connected Devices Platform Service' depends on 'Network Connection Broker'.

If you cannot change the Service States in the Services Setting Page, there is an alternate solution to activate services via registry: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2495-services-start-disable.html#option4

Peace
